Tweetdeck vs Echofon

Now that the new TweetDeck for iOS is out and in use, I can make this comparison, and do so with relish. The iOS environment not only provides a lot of apps, it also makes fantastic quality apps available. I like having to choose between good things, challenging myself to refine my requirements to be ever more stringent!

Echofon does everything I want in a twitter client, so what does TweetDeck offer that interests me? Facebook integration. I use Facebook to see what my far flung family is doing. But I don't really like Facebook, so having the feed show up alongside Twitter is a good way for me to read the feed, without having to go to Facebook.

The new TweetDeck incorporates FB into the Twitter feed. No avoiding it there. I am not sure if I like that as well as having a separate column or page dedicated to each feed, so I reconfigured my columns to keep out separate. As well, I made a column with mentions from
Twitter and Facebook combined. It is powerful enough to let you set up columns any way you like.

The new TweetDeck is very nicely designed, as gorgeous as Tweetbot, I think. When writing a tweet this is most apparent. Well designed, efficient, crisp and clean.

The navigation is simple. Between column views, into and out of tweets and links.

TweetDeck supports Instapaper. This is rapidly becoming one of my base requirements for any app the I use to digest information. Thank you!

Minor issues exist, like crashing when using an Instapaper link.

I had a hard time moving the order of columns, re-naming columns and deleting columns. Then I did as recommended in the Tweetdeck tweet, red the blog, and found the process simple, effective and elegant. I debate with myself whether or not it OS a flaw on an iOS app to require instructions. But this app is a fairly powerful and is worth that extra effort.

Still missing is a mute function. Why is that so often neglected? Am I the only one who started following someone who is obsessive about their follower count, but boring, or a colleague who can help me but is thin skinned about their whiney tweets? With Echofon it's easy. Mute. I will have to see if I can live without this.
