Travel for me began in the '57 Ford station wagon. We put a lot of miles on that car before the '62 Merc came along. With three boys in the back, and a cartop for equipment and sleeping, we camped all over Michigan, watching the Interstates being built around us. It was also a workhorse, carrying tools and supplies on the weekly trip up north, a 5 hour drive on two lanes. Plastic seats, no air conditioning, technology was an AM radio, used to listen to Tiger Baseball announced by Ernie Harwell. We watched the electric poles go by in the moonlight at 50 MPH on highway 18. It was great.
