iPad as Menu, Old Idea Re-Hashed

iPads are ubiquitous, oui?  It is no longer a surprise to see the hard-to-resist-touching devices in any application. Gratifying, yes.  Noteworthy, yes. But Macgasm may be working a bit too hard at working in this, the slow tech cycle (until CES starts spewing more news).

We all have a limited view of The world, and our unique take on what we see is what's important, not what we see, for that has probably been seen before.

Just fly Delta through JFK and there, at Bar Brace or Croque Madame are iPads replacing menus as well as taking orders. Note, they don't replace servers, who should be re- focusses on helpful selling. These are just a couple of places doing this with the iPad.

Also note, Bar Brace and Croque Madame sell some of the best coffee you will ever enjoy, courtesy of World Bean and CoffeePedaler.

I can tell you that when you sit in the gate area in this Delta terminal, you are within arm's reach of an iPad.  It is like demi-heaven. Get the news, kill time, and yes, the menu is there to browse as well. Place an order.

But where is the interpretation here?  The first hand? The added value? Without it seems like a press release.

At Bar Brace the iPad experience was not yet available when I was there. What I saw was the installation, and my head was spinning. Perhaps a hundred iPads laying in various stages of being put into housings and installed on counters. A potential wonderland. But the installation? Everything but the screen hidden, and as a result, the intrinsic industrial design altered. Burkas for iPads. And the sotwrae layer on top of the iOS was inelegant to put it kindly.

Such a bold move, so clever, but ultimately the delight of the iPad removed.  Not the best application of the device. Hopefully the full experience is available at places like the Chicago Club.

Imagine sitting down at a steakhouse and flicking through an iPad instead of a menu to select wine for your dinner. Don't ...
